Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in Science and Health Research (EDIS) Inaugural Symposium

EDIS banner

5 September 2017, 09.00-17:30 followed by drinks reception

The Francis Crick Institute, Wellcome and GSK are collaborating to form Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in Science and Health Research (EDIS) to make equality, diversity and inclusion a priority in research organisations. Our hope is to build a lasting network that will extend beyond the three founding institutions.

Research excellence is driven by a diversity of ideas. By actively promoting a culture of inclusion, respect and equal treatment we can accelerate innovation.

Join us for our inaugural symposium on Tuesday 5 September 2017 which will draw together 250 leaders from across UK science and research.

Why come?

Inspiration

With a confirmed keynote talk from Silicon Valley entrepreneur and theoretical neuroscientist Dr Vivienne Ming, you can expect to learn about the latest innovations in diversity data analytics. You will also hear from our founding institutions' leaders, who will introduce their own EDI commitments, and invite you to make yours.

Practical Tips

Covering topics from baseline data to reverse-diverse mentoring, the event will deliver interactive sessions with practical tips on measuring diversity, and creating an inclusive culture. FutureWork Institute will deliver an unconscious bias session, while leaders from organisations such as the Equality Challenge Unit and the Social Mobility Foundation will be joined in conversation with the founding institutions' EDI experts to discuss the best approach to benchmarking.

Community

The symposium is a step towards building a shared understanding of EDI challenges. It is also an opportunity to share best practice of embedding EDI in research organisations. EDIS aims to maintain this network of like-minded academic and private sector organisations through a shared vision of promoting inclusion in the workplace. There will be opportunities to network over refreshments and lunch throughout the day, which will end with a drinks reception.
