The Francis Crick Institute’s building site was rated as
‘exceptionally good’ in its first Considerate Constructors Scheme
inspection.
On 14 July, a range of activities in and around the construction
site were subjected to scrutiny by a Considerate Constructors
Scheme (CCS) monitor. The industry expert assessed the site’s
performance in eight categories including safety, cleanliness and
respect.
The site was awarded a total score of 37.5 out of a possible 40
points: a clear indication of commitment to the Considerate
Constructors Scheme from The Francis Crick Institute and building
firm Laing O’Rourke.
The report stated: “This is an exemplary site and it is early
days for this long term project; there has already been an
impressive level of community involvement. The initiative to engage
40 apprentices during the project and the level of information
issued to those affected by the project is outstanding.”
The site for The Francis Crick Institute scored the maximum of
five points for being considerate, responsible and a good
neighbour. The top rating is only awarded when a site is doing
something exceptional and unique, as well as working to a very high
standard. In this case, good communications with people who live
nearby, a detailed complaints procedure, and the attendance of CCS
character, Ivor Goodsite, at a local community event were noted as
examples of good practice.
All other areas of observation, including environmental policy
and health and safety procedures, received a rating of 4.5 (high
level beyond compliance) showing that the site operates at a level
well above average.
Andy Smith, The Francis Crick Institute’s Construction Director
said: “The Francis Crick Institute will be a landmark building in
London. On-site works began only a few weeks ago so achieving such
a positive report at this stage is a tremendous start to our
four-year construction programme. We are very pleased with
progress to date and are confident that high standards will be
maintained throughout.”
The overall result puts the site in the top 10% of the
Considerate Constructors sites across the country making it
eligible for the Scheme’s Annual National Awards.
CCS inspectors will visit the site regularly to make sure it
continues to operate in line with the Scheme.
