The Chair of Trustees at the British Heart Foundation, Philip Yea, has joined the Board of The Francis Crick Institute as an independent director and trustee.
The Francis Crick Institute, due to open in 2015, is a charity
founded by the Medical Research Council, Cancer Research UK, the
Wellcome Trust and UCL (University College London). It will be a
world-class medical research centre with a strong national role —
training scientists and developing ideas for public good.
Sir David Cooksey, the chair of The Francis Crick Institute said:
"Philip's experience as Chair of Trustees at the British Heart
Foundation coupled with his career as a top flight business leader
will be a wonderful asset for the new institute. Philip's
experience and wisdom will help to create an institute that will
make a substantial difference to the health of countless
people."
Philip Yea added: "I'm delighted to join the Board of this
exceptional charity. The Francis Crick Institute will be a
world-leading centre of biomedical research and innovation. It has
the potential to bring together scientists, doctors, nurses and
others to understand better the causes of health and disease and
improve the lives of people across the world."
Biography:
Philip Yea was Chief Executive of the private equity group 3i from
2004 until January 2009. Before then, he was a partner in the
private equity business of Investcorp, focusing on the performance
of portfolio investments.
He is a former Finance Director of Diageo plc where he played a
key part in the creation of the global drinks group through the
merger of Guinness and GrandMet in 1997.
He is a non-Executive Director at Vodafone which he joined in
September 2005. He has previously held non-executive roles at HBOS
and Manchester United.
Philip holds a number of advisory roles including to Prince
Andrew, The Duke of York in his capacity as Special Representative
for International Trade and Investment, as well as to
PricewaterhouseCoopers in the UK and Bridges Ventures.
Philip is a member of the Chartered Institute of Management
Accountants and has a degree in Modern Languages from Oxford
University.
